Meet the Judges: Aki Eguchi Brings Bartending Brilliance to the 2025 Asia World Spirits Competition
As we gear up to unveil the Best of Class winners from the 2025 Asia World Spirits Competition on August 11, we're spotlighting some of the exceptional individuals behind the scenes — our judges. These are the palates shaping the future of spirits across the region and beyond.
One standout member of this year’s panel is Aki Eguchi, the Bar Director, Chief Bartender, and Co-Owner of Jigger & Pony Group, one of the most respected names in Asia’s cocktail scene. Aki is also behind the new bar, Cosmo Pony in Jakarta. Just two weeks ago, Jigger & Pony was named #1 Bar in Singapore and #3 in Asia at Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2025, cementing its place at the forefront of cocktail culture.
What sets the Asia World Spirits Competition apart from other international competitions?
The diversity of entries and the regional focus on Asia provide a unique lens that reflects local trends, innovation, and cultural influence. What also sets this competition apart is the diversity among judges, not just in nationality, but in professional background. As someone from a bartending background, I found the range of perspectives valuable. The judging process felt both rigorous and open-minded, allowing both established and emerging brands to shine.
Which categories do you think have the most potential for growth in this market?
Agave spirits and Asian craft spirits continue to show strong growth potential. There’s increasing consumer interest in authenticity and storytelling, and these categories deliver on both.
How does this competition help brands break into or grow within the Asian market?
Winning a medal here provides strong validation from respected industry professionals and instantly elevates a brand’s credibility. It helps visibility, especially for brands looking to enter new markets or secure distribution. In fact, we sometimes get direct inquiries from customers after a brand wins a top medal like Double Gold.
What spirits styles or brands are you excited to see gaining traction in Asia?
I’m excited about the rise of Japanese gin, terroir-driven rice-based spirits, and premium non-alcoholic options.
What do you think winning a medal here means for a brand?
It’s a mark of excellence and authenticity. In a competitive and brand-conscious market like Asia, a medal from this competition can be a powerful selling point for both trade and consumers.

Submit the product that best represents your brand identity. Be thoughtful in your presentation and don’t be afraid to enter something bold. A clear vision, combined with quality execution, tends to resonate most with judges.
