The 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) brought together thousands of spirits from across the globe, each vying for top honors in their respective categories. Among the standout performers this year was a powerful lineup of Japanese whiskies. Below, we spotlight the Japanese whisky finalists that earned Best in Class distinctions and are now in contention for the coveted Best in Show award to be announced at the Top Shelf Gala later this year.

Kanosuke Single Malt Peated

Kanosuke Distillery has earned international acclaim for its innovation, craftsmanship, and coastal influence. The Single Malt Peated expression is a refined example of the distillery’s ability to balance smoke and delicacy with finesse.

With floral aromas layered over stone fruit and a touch of ginger, this whisky offers a striking nose. On the palate, it’s elegant, complex, and distinctly mineral, delivering a contemplative drinking experience that lingers with a delicious and long-lasting finish.

A beautifully balanced whisky — floral and smoky in harmony, with a complexity that rewards slow sipping.

Kanosuke Single Malt — The Mellow Bar Reserve

Also from Kanosuke, The Mellow Bar Reserve is a rich and expressive single malt inspired by the distillery's popular Tokyo-based whisky bar. This release is matured in select casks to capture deep complexity and texture. Expect enticing aromas of apricot, ginger, and saffron, leading into a palate that is dense, full-bodied, and luxurious.

Long-lasting and layered, this expression speaks to the harmony of fruit and spice that defines great Japanese whisky.

Hinomaru Whisky Sakura Ra

Hinomaru Whisky is crafted by Kiuchi Brewery, a heritage Japanese producer known for its sake and beer — and now, for its growing whisky acclaim. Sakura Ra is a bold single malt that reflects both innovation and tradition.

On the nose, pear and toasted grain set a warm and inviting tone. The taste is powerful and stern, with a structured depth that reveals itself sip by sip.

The finish is lively and long. A dramatic conclusion to a dynamic whisky.

Hinomaru Whisky Signature 1823

Another standout from Hinomaru, the Signature 1823 expression pays homage to the brand’s founding year. Crafted with precision and aged to perfection, this whisky balances elegance with strength. The aroma is a gentle blend of chamomile and saffron, while the palate bursts with notes of ripe apricot.

“A long and tasty finish rounds out this expressive whisky — a perfect example of Japan’s ability to fuse subtlety with impact.”
