Rye has spent the last decade reclaiming its place at the head of the American whiskey table, and this year's Best Rye Whiskey finalists make the case better than any history lesson could. From a revived Maryland style to a Vermont farm's most experimental cask work yet, these six bottlings span centuries of tradition and some genuinely new ideas about what rye can do. Here's a closer look at the finalists competing for Best of Class at the 2026 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Baltimore Spirits Company — Epoch Maryland Straight Rye Whiskey 6 Year Old Cask Strength

Baltimore Spirits Company has spent years reviving a nearly extinct style: Maryland rye, pot-distilled the way it was made by Scotch-Irish settlers generations before bourbon existed. Epoch is the distillery's flagship expression, and this 6 Year Old Cask Strength bottling is a high point in that ongoing project, built on the distinctive sweetness and smoothness that once made Maryland rye famous up and down the East Coast.

A bold, oak and wood-forward nose with classic rye character and fresh, grassy notes. Gripping and lively on the palate, with a bright, lingering mint finish.

O.K.I. — Single Barrel Rye Whiskey

O.K.I. takes its name from the tri-state whiskey corridor of Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, and the brand has built a reputation on hand-selecting standout single barrels from the region's most respected sources. This rye, distilled in Lawrenceburg, Indiana and bottled in Bardstown, Kentucky, is a high-rye, high-proof showcase of exactly what that curation can deliver.

Big and unapologetic, with oak and clove leading a sweet rye spice backbone. Bold from start to finish.

WhistlePig — The Boss Hog Collection: Boss XII Feather & Flame Rye Whiskey

Every edition of WhistlePig's Boss Hog series exists to do something the brand has never done before, and Feather & Flame is no exception. This twelfth installment is finished in pulque curado de cacao barrels, casks seasoned with fermented agave sap, cacao, and Mexican chile peppers, making it the world's first rye to carry that particular finish. Hand-bottled at the WhistlePig farm and topped with a handmade pewter pig, it's as much a statement piece as it is a whiskey.

Warm on the nose, with brown butter and sage carrying a whisper of chili powder. Savory and distinctive.

James B. Beam Distilling Co. — Old Overholt 12 Year Old Extra Aged Cask Strength

Old Overholt has a fair claim to being the oldest continuously produced whiskey brand in America, with roots tracing back to 1810 in Pennsylvania. Now made at James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Kentucky, the brand's Extra Aged Cask Strength series has pushed older and bolder each year, and this 12 Year Old entry — matured across four warehouses in Clermont — is the most mature expression in that lineup to date.

Oak-forward, with gingerbread, black pepper, and stone fruit on a rich, buttery, nutty palate. Finishes with dusty cinnamon and caramel warmth.

Art of the Spirits — Mogadishu Hazmat Single Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey

Art of the Spirits built its identity around limited-edition single barrels that pair serious whiskey with original artwork and military tribute themes, and the Hazmat line carries that mission forward. This single barrel rye shows the brand's range beyond bourbon, delivering nuance and spice management at a proof point that could easily overwhelm a less carefully selected barrel.

Spiced tea and licorice open into baked apple, cinnamon, clove, and allspice. Spiced but never hot, with a long, complex finish.

Kings County Distillery — Barrel Strength Straight Empire Rye Whiskey

Kings County Distillery, New York City's oldest operating whiskey distillery, helped found the Empire Rye designation, a style made exclusively by and for New York distillers using in-state grown grain. This barrel strength bottling, built from New York-grown Danko rye and English malted barley, is an annual release that sells out fast and has racked up accolades well beyond this competition.

Black tea and sweetened condensed milk meet tannic spice, elegant and integrated. Sweet toffee and Thai milk tea carry through a spicy cinnamon finish.

What ties these six together isn't a single style or region — it's six different ways of asking what rye whiskey is for. Maryland pot-still tradition sits next to Indiana high-rye sourcing; a Vermont farm's most experimental cask finish sits next to a 12-year-old Kentucky classic; a New York-grown grain project sits next to a single barrel built around military tribute artwork. Rye has never been more willing to take risks, and this category proves the risks are paying off.
