Italy’s red wine tradition extends far beyond Sangiovese and Barbera. From the rustic charm of Montepulciano to the bold depth of Negro Amaro, lesser-seen Italian varietals continue to gain recognition on American soil. At the 2025 San Francisco International Wine Competition, the Best Other Italian Red Wine category showcased this diversity, highlighting wines that balance Old World character with New World precision. Leading the category was a standout expression of Negro Amaro, with an impressive Montepulciano finalist close behind.

Winner: VJB Cellars 2022 Estate Negro Amaro

Taking top honors is VJB Cellars’ 2022 Estate Negro Amaro from Sonoma Valley, a wine that captured the judges’ attention with its richness, depth, and structural presence. In the glass, the wine reveals a dark ruby hue, hinting at its intensity. The aromatics open with lush blueberry and jammy fruit tones, layered with dried fruit and subtle nutmeg spice. On the palate, the wine is luscious yet structured, offering a firm tannic backbone and what judges described as a “nice bite” that keeps the wine focused and food-friendly.

Blueberry, jammy, luscious.

Negro Amaro, traditionally associated with Southern Italy’s Puglia region, is known for its bold fruit and earthy undertones. This Sonoma Valley estate-grown bottling honors those roots while delivering polished texture and New World vibrancy. The result is a wine that feels both powerful and refined — a deserving Best Other Italian Red.

Finalist: Flat Creek Estate 2023 Montepulciano

Earning finalist recognition is Flat Creek Estate’s 2023 Montepulciano from Texas Hill Country, a wine that impressed the panel with its aromatic complexity and textured palate. This Montepulciano opens with inviting notes of cinnamon, cherry, and dried fruit, underscored by earthy nuances that add dimension. Bright cherry fruit carries through on the palate, accompanied by berry aromatics and a fresh, lingering finish. A pleasantly chewy texture provides structure and depth, reinforcing the wine’s rustic charm.

Cinnamon, cherry, dried fruit, earthy.

Montepulciano thrives in warm climates, and this Texas Hill Country example demonstrates how the varietal can adapt beautifully outside of Italy. Its balance of spice, fruit, and structure made it a compelling contender in a competitive field.

A Celebration of Italian Varietal Diversity

This year’s “Other Italian Red” category highlights the growing success of distinctive Italian grapes in American vineyards. From the bold, tannic richness of Negro Amaro in Sonoma Valley to the spicy, textured Montepulciano of Texas Hill Country, these wines reflect both heritage and innovation. The 2025 San Francisco International Wine Competition once again proves that Italy’s lesser-known red varietals are not only thriving internationally, they are earning top honors on some of the industry’s most respected stages.
