Pātsch: Extraordinary Tequila

by The Tasting Alliance Team  |  03.27.2022

Pātsch refers to “getting hit in all the right ways” and this tequila hits you right off the bat with its striking bottle. Before you can open the spiked cap, you’ll want to pick it up, using the knuckle-duster-esque neck. If only every bottle were this fun to hold!

A brand born from two friends who love tequila, Pātsch centers around those enjoying it doing so their way, creating their own experiences from the product. One thing that doesn’t require interpretation is the quality of the product they produce. Their tequilas come from organically grown and sustainably produced agave fields in one of the original tequila-producing regions in Mexico, proving what’s inside the bottle is just as impressive as the glass itself.

This unique bottle design uses centuries old glass blowing techniques to create the signature shape. The long neck, spiked cap, and knuckle handle leading into the balloon-shaped base is just begging to be picked up off the shelf. Even the resin cap is painted and sanded by hand. They tout this bottle as a reflection of the spirit that it holds — striking and full of character.

So what’s inside that bottle? Pātsch’s tequilas start with distillery-owned agave, aged six to seven years or more, from Amatitán in El Valle, near Guadalajara. They use exclusively sustainably grown and harvested 100% Blue Weber agave, which is then cooked in a brick oven with juice extracted from a roller mill. Each batch is then double distilled and uses local water sourced from a deep well. Master Distiller Eladio Montes Sr and his son Eladio Jr are at the helm of this careful process, using artisanal and traditional methods to deliver their unique experience and taste. Four expressions are produced: blanco, reposado, añejo and extra añejo.

The judges at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition were wowed by this extra añejo tequila, awarding it with a prestigious Double Gold medal. Pātsch ages this tequila in American whiskey barrels for seven years to create the golden-hued liquid, showcasing both the base of agave and flavors of oak lent from aging. The body is silky, with initial aromas of toffee, oak, and butterscotch. The palate gives way to brown sugar and honey, along with a little citrus which provides nice balance. The oak is present, but not overwhelming, making this the perfect pour for a pre-dinner drink or a nightcap. The only thing we recommend adding to it is ice if you like, otherwise, drink this bold yet delicate tequila neat to savor all of its unique flavors.

This showstopper is the perfect conversation bottle on your home bar, or a great gift for your friend who appreciates subversive craftsmanship – as long as they pour a glass for you.
