The 2024 San Francisco International Wine Competition brought attention to the elegance and versatility of Italian white varietal wines, recognizing outstanding examples that balance crisp acidity, complex aromatics, and vibrant flavors. Earning the prestigious title of Best Italian White Varietal Wine was Raffaldini Vineyards 2023 Superiore Raffaldini Vermentino, a wine that captivated judges with its expressive character. Aromas of green apple, lime, and a delicate hint of almond set the stage for a bright, citrus-driven palate. The lively acidity is complemented by a touch of salinity, leading to a crisp, clean finish with lingering mineral notes, making this Vermentino a stellar representation of the varietal’s potential.

Two exceptional wines were also in contention for the top honor, each offering its own distinctive take on Italian white varietals. Duchman Family Winery 2023 Vermentino impressed with its refreshing profile, showcasing citrus, green apple, and delicate floral aromas. Its light-bodied structure was lifted by bright acidity, carrying flavors of lemon and green apple, with a subtle minerality rounding out the finish. Cove Mesa Vineyard 2022 Trebbiano Dolce Flying Leap Vineyard, another finalist, presented a richer expression, opening with inviting aromas of white peach, apricot, and honey. The palate delivered ripe stone fruit flavors with a hint of citrus, leading to a smooth, lingering finish balanced by a gentle sweetness.

These award-winning Italian white varietal wines highlight the diversity and craftsmanship found in this category, offering wine lovers a range of styles to explore, from crisp and mineral-driven to lush and fruit-forward.
